Are you an aspiring filmmaker, director, editor, actor, photographer, or simply a creative who loves the outdoors and a would enjoy a break from all the noise? I'm attempting to round up a small posse of 7–12 passionate people for an experimental, collaborative filmmaking 'trip' into the Eastern Sierra. This is an unpaid passion project built around the idea that everyone should have an opportunity to create. Rather than one person directing everything, the goal is for everyone involved to have a chance to direct and shoot their own ideas, collaborate with the group, and experiment with a different approach to filmmaking. THE PLAN Depart: Los Angeles via carpool Evening of Monday, September 7 Production: September 8–11 Wrap/return: Friday, September 11 We'll travel together in a small convoy of no more than 5 vehicles, with the goal of keeping transportation, food, and lodging costs as low as possible. All rough estimates at the moment, first got to get a group chat going. For photos and a better sense of the camp/shot location, check out Eastern Sierra Observatory on Instagram. THE TIME COMMITMENT This isn't intended to be a traditional 12-hour film set. The goal is for individual volunteer work periods to ideally stay at or under approximately 4 hours per day, leaving plenty of time for people to explore, collaborate, work on their own ideas, relax, and enjoy the location. The schedule will be collaborative and flexible rather than rigid. EVERYONE GETS TO CREATE One of the main ideas behind this project is to give aspiring filmmakers an opportunity to actually take the director's chair. Want to experiment with cinematography? Have a weird visual idea you've never had the resources or local to attempt? Let's get a group of artists up there with cameras and time to experiment together. The documentary angle for this project is worth considering on it's own. Also, you don't need to be an established filmmaker. Heck, I've only officially been associated with one official production, many years ago. But I was a reliable stage manager in Los Angeles from 2017-2019, so I know artists need help with scheduling and logistics, so that's what I'm attempting here. Just a herd dog doing what's in it's nature really FOOD & CAMP Since we're traveling as a group, the more people who participate, the more we can spread out shared expenses. We'll establish a shared food/board budget ahead of the trip and use it to purchase ingredients according to a predetermined meal plan. I'm a trained and certified group chef with experience preparing meals for people with dietary restrictions, so the goal is to have reliable meals, snacks, and breaks available throughout the workday rather than everyone having to figure out food individually. Dietary restrictions and food needs can be discussed with the group beforehand. COSTS This is not a paid production. Everyone should understand that there will be shared costs associated with transportation, food, lodging/camping, and potentially production supplies. The intent is to keep those costs as low as reasonably possible by traveling and purchasing supplies collectively. We'll discuss the expected costs transparently with interested participants before committing. WHO I'M LOOKING FOR You don't have to be a professional. I'm interested in people who are: • Aspiring directors • Camera operators • Editors • Sound people • Actors • Photographers • Writers • Musicians / composers • Film students If you're excited about making something and trying a different approach, I'd like to hear from you. LET'S BUILD THE GROUP The first step is getting an interested group together ASAP so we can start talking about ideas, logistics, equipment, costs, transportation, food, and what everyone wants to create. If you're interested, reply with a little about yourself, what you do (or want to learn) in filmmaking, and what you'd like to experiment with. Let's get out of LA, bring some cameras into the Eastern Sierra, and make something weird and beautiful. https://www.easternsierraobservatory.com/ https://www.instagram.com/nosequehonite?igsh=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ%3D%3D&utm_source=qr
