I'm looking for a maker, engineering student, robotics hobbyist, or electronics enthusiast to help build a custom split-flap display for a theatrical production called TIMELESS. The project is inspired by vintage airport and train station destination boards (similar to Vestaboard and traditional split-flap displays). The display will be mounted above a custom time-travel portal set piece and will serve as a major visual element in the show. PROJECT OVERVIEW Display size: Approximately 22 modules total 11 characters wide x 2 rows high Capable of displaying years and short messages Examples: DESTINATION 1987 DESTINATION 2047 DESTINATION UNKNOWN DESTINATION ERROR The display should be capable of changing messages during the show and operating in a pre-show mode where years cycle automatically. SCOPE OF WORK Mechanical: 3D print all required module parts Assemble flaps and mechanisms Install motors and sensors Build and test modules Create display enclosure/header Graphics: Print and apply character labels/stickers to flaps Ensure alignment and readability Electronics: Install controller (ESP32, Raspberry Pi, or similar) Motor drivers Wiring and power distribution Calibration and testing Software: Ability to display custom text strings Random destination mode Preset destinations and years Reliable operation during live performances QLab Integration (Preferred) The display should ideally be controllable from QLab using OSC, Ethernet, or serial communication. Example commands: Display "1987" Display "2047" Display "UNKNOWN" Start random year mode Stop random year mode IDEAL CANDIDATE Engineering student Robotics hobbyist Arduino / ESP32 enthusiast 3D printing enthusiast Maker space member Theatre technology enthusiast This is a paid project. If interested, please send: Brief background Photos or videos of previous projects Relevant experience Availability Estimated budget range Location: Greater Vancouver area preferred. I already have concept artwork and a clear vision for the finished piece. This is a unique opportunity to help build a signature prop for a live theatrical production.
