We are seeking a creative mask, puppet, or creature maker to help build a practical "skeleton" for a deer/dog hybrid creature featured in an independent short film. The piece will serve as the physical foundation and on-set reference for a creature that will later be enhanced through VFX. We are looking for something eerie and organic rather than highly polished—a skeletal, animal-like form that can be positioned and filmed on location. The final design and construction approach will be developed collaboratively with the director, production designer, and VFX artist. Filming will take place on September 26th, so the completed piece must be delivered in advance of that date, with enough time for the production team to inspect it and make any minor adjustments before the shoot. This could be a good opportunity for an emerging artist, student, or maker interested in gaining narrative film experience and receiving a screen credit. All approved material costs will be covered by production. Our labor budget is limited, but we are also open to proposals from artists who can offer an accessible rate. Please feel free to share what would be realistic for you — we want to be transparent about our resources and respectful of your time. Experience with any of the following would be especially helpful: - Creature, puppet, prop, or mask fabrication - Armatures and lightweight skeletal structures - Foam, latex, resin, thermoplastics, wire, or found materials - Practical effects or work designed for later VFX enhancement To apply, please send: - A brief introduction - Examples of relevant work, including personal or student projects - Your location and general availability - An estimated labor rate or project fee, if applicable The production is based in New York. We welcome unconventional approaches and are especially interested in someone who enjoys imaginative creature design and collaborative experimentation.
