sony e 2.8/16 lens, excellent Sony SEL16F28S E-mount 16mm f/2.8 APS-C Ultra-wide Prime Lens (Silver), Excellent Condition INCLUDED SALE CONTENTS -- sony e 2.8/16 (silver) -- back lens cap -- front lens cap -- off-brand lens hood OVERVIEW / GENERAL -- 63 × 23 mm / 74 g / ø49 mm -- chinese production -- introduced in 2010 -- plastic internals, metal barrel and focus ring (woah), metal mount (thank heavens) -- it appears that there's only a silver version -- surprisingly not many pancakes with autofocus are available, even in aps-c, despite e-mount being the best developed when it comes to third-party lenses -- about 300 usd new and 200 used at retailers -- modern production, no radium or other funny stuff (the glass is probably also plastic, or even if it isn't there's barely any of it anyway) -- purchased used in europe in 2021 from japan at first, returned due to customs and shipping issues and found a cheaper local sale in the meantime from a hobbyist -- maintained well, stored safely and never physically abused -- never disassembled for repairs while in my possession and does not appear to ever have been -- shifting away from sony e, no matter how much i enjoy this and the 16-50 pancakes - mft is superior when it comes to small lenses, and if you're going e-mount better make it fe (never mind - sony officially sucks as a brand present day) -- published this sale on multiple sites so get it while it's hot ESSENTIAL INFORMATION -- don't try to put on a variable nd filter on it while the hood is on the lens (vnds are inherently wider than the filter thread) - it's going to be a headache to remove either. -- minor vignette around edges - normal for wide angle lenses, especially with this amount of compromise to make one of the thinnest most capable pancake available. i believe the camera corrects for this in part but might still need adjusting in post if this is a crucial concern. -- good autofocus, not that you'll need it that much - wide angles are almost exclusively focused to infinity at all times -- of course you can go wider but not in this small of a package -- compared to the 16-50, this is more compact, lighter and less of a hassle considering there's no mechanical extension - just turn on the camera and shoot OVERALL IMPRESSIONS -- 24mm ff equivalent is pretty wide and results in some interesting perspective images especially for visuals with parallel lines. -- good separation, colors and sharpness. BRUTALLY HONEST CONSIDERATIONS -- if you use a small compact body of the previous decade you can go almost as small as the smallest camera ever made (gm1/gm5) as bodies like the nex-5t or a5100 are barely bigger and the combination with the pancake lenses make them truly pocketable; not as comparable to m4/3 of course, but close enough with the benefit of the larger sensor (more light, more depth). -- focus by wire - might be annoying for you to use if you like manual zoom, but then again there's barely any focus adjustments to make at this focal length. -- sony as a company has been becoming a sleazy company offering little customer support while the quality of their products has been decreasing. they have also decided to borrow canon's cripple hammer for their new cameras gatekeeping superior useful features in their most expensive bodies which are also full of deficiencies. as a matter of fact there are few who don't take advantage of the lack of accountability when it comes to consumer rights. -- the older bodies have their issues, but the features they provide are still better than what is being held back nowadays. EXTERNAL CONDITION / COSMETICS -- minor scratches here and there, nothing much noticeable. -- no scratches on glass elements. -- sticky labels on bottom of lens have began peeling from the corners (normal). -- no grime, considerable paint loss, or anything nasty on exterior. -- used in a smoke- and pet-free environment, dust-free as far as regular households go. maintained mostly in a glass cabinet for the last year. INTERNAL CONDITION / COMPONENTS -- no flaring, ghosting, or other artifacts projected. no glass defects, no internal reflections, no scratches on internal elements, no bubbles, no spots, no chemical separation or delamination, no haze, no fungus. no noticeable major dust or hairs inside. -- there is noticeable dust inside the lens when a light is shone into it, but nothing that affects the image rendition. the lens has not been disassembled for cleaning. -- aperture blades are clean. FUNCTIONALITY / INTERFACE / MECHANICS -- electrical contacts are clean. -- mount is stable and firm. -- focus ring exhibits some minor grinding at one position (would be audible if recording audio with internal microphone) but nothing unusual. -- no loose elements, contacts, or cables. no play or give of any of the elements. -- filter thread is fully functional and normal. -- all screws are completely flush and have never been an issue. -- aperture blades are quick, and fully functional. they make a very quiet noise when adjusted - not unusual. -- manual focus, photo and video autofocus work normally. -- small focus throw, normal for focus-by-wire photo lenses. -- small macro capabilities but works well with macro extenders. -- no internal stabilization - what you see is what you get. -- no audible noise during autofocus performance or normal use. PERFORMANCE / CAPACITY -- some compromise with chroma, but very acceptable considering the size of the lens. -- no unusual color cast or tint. normal lens glare and contrast loss in direct light. -- no blur, smearing, spots, or dimming. -- normal flares and sunstars. smooth bokeh. -- no focus decentering or offset noticed. -- no focus distance indication. DURABILITY / LONGEVITY -- keep it under a window for some uv and it will probably last you many more years. there are no major mechanical parts that could break, just don't drop it and you'll be fine. the lens hood helps rebound from drops but it will be a harder fall if it's attached to a camera. just keep it safe. metal housing but it's not indestructible. ACCESSORIES / ELEMENTS -- lens hood and caps are in normal working condition. -- hood is plastic but rigid and firm. it is reversible but only for storage - it extends further than where the mount would be, but not past the back lens cap. -- caps are normal and sufficient. -- the front lens cap has the superior recessed style of opening clips rather than those to be pressed from the sides of the lens cap which works very well when using a lens hood, although not as flat. COMPATIBILITY / CONNECTIVITY -- can also be used on full-frame cameras which will crop the sensor into aps-c by default. -- apparently designed for compact aps-c bodies. use it to your advantage. NOTES -- at first ordered from japan right around the time of implementation of import duties in the eu which led into a big time-wasting process with our local customs and failing postal services (nobody knows nothing), so i requested a return, and i believe they lost it in post because there was never return tracking and the seller took it upon themselves. ADDITIONAL REFERENCE / TECHNICAL DETAILS -- all technical specifications, manuals, and guides available online in the manufacturer's archive and other "manualslib"-style sites with notable resources being cameradecision, apotelyt, wikipedia, bhphotovideo, and dpreview SATISFACTION GUARANTEED!!! i know what it is to anticipate a shipment, especially of something you're eager to work with and you are hoping will truly improve your experience. i'm sure few people purchase used without giving much thought to the main factor that is a significant discount from the retail price, thus carefully comparing prices and observing quality of the article at hand determining the value-to-price ratio for you. if you feel a whim of doubt you most probably wouldn't be reading this and you already know whether you want to make the purchase but just need that extra reassurance to give you peace. this is why i document the quality of every article very carefully and thoroughly, give you detailed honest information and photos of the condition of the items, the general functionality, method of use and things that i might not like about them, without trying to elusively hide anything and mislead you leaving you with a cold wave of buyer's remorse. ethics are an important factor with small techies and traders. please feel free to ask any questions and i will help you any way i can, even if you just need general information about the items and can't buy it at this point. i want to make you feel compelled to praise the quality of my customer service. don't make this an impulse purchase but something you are sure you will truly enjoy and cherish! P.S. thank you for taking interest in my small garage sale! as embarrassing as it is i have long paled by the ebay veteran that is my father making thousands of online sales of his art and maintaining a proud 100% rating since the early years of the world wide web! !!! REDUCE !!! REUSE !!! REPAIR !!! Please take a moment to consider if it's possible to use your older devices and other belongings just a bit longer and whether you could find them an alternative use or pass them on to someone who might need them. If repair or component replacement is no longer an option, and if they are unusable and no parts of them are salvageable, then consider finding them an alternative use leaving their recycling and disposal as a last resort. Consider eliminating single-use materials and the purchase and disposal of non-biodegradable waste from your daily life. Recycling is not always an option and many materials are not recyclable, especially with modern consumer technology, avoided like an anthill where unprofitable. The continuous mindless production of e-waste and use of greenwashing for PR campaigns by corporate giants will lead to devastating results if we don't act against it. Vote with your wallet. Enjoy what you have and make it more special! Thank you for your interest.
