woodworking / building skills apprenticeship opportunity (Brooklyn) This is for someone interested in hosting film production events at our space while learning hands-on craft skills. Pay is dependent on background skills. I run a multi-film location studios which has authentic vintage industrial artifacts and props. Additionally I still have a fully functioning makerspace shop capable of woodworking, metalwork, welding, industrial sewing. I also have an amazing roof garden from years of doing volunteer urban greeting work which we also utilize for film and photo shoots. The makers apprenticeship is with an eye towards being proficient in a multifunctional shop such as able to sew leather /canvas with industrial sewing machines, welding and repurposing vintage hardware and artifacts. Currently we will be utilizing vintage materials to enhance an old world industrial smoked fish factory building as a photo / film location space. As such, we are seeking those who may be in the film/photo industry background who perceive having real building skills may add a new dimension to being a robust creator. I am superb at building out a space or evoking a feeling from displaying vintage artifacts yet in the repartee of teaching apprentices, I believe learning should be a two-way street. If people have social media skills, video editing, able to take video, photos and text to create internet content is welcomed. If you have an interest in posting onto social media content about how and utilizing craft skills to promote self empowerment for others or finding artifact items, with a little research tells a cultural story of Who We Are, this could be a good fit. This cross Mutual opportunity could be for someone who has a background in film , graphic design or photography. The latter part of the photos are demonstrating how we are utilizing various spaces for film and photo shoots. Currently I am using my industrial space for film and photo shoot so if you're interested in introducing yourself to this matrix of creative people this is also a good networking space. Please read carefully: This offering can be in exchange for someone looking to apprentice real skills such as cabinetry, woodworking, metal work, or sewing in canvas/leather. For a person seeking to broaden their own creating skills. I am located in East Williamsburg and run a multi material workshop. This is a great opportunity for someone looking to gain real skills or usage in woodworking, light metal work or industrial sewing- all while gaining exposure to their own ability to create projects and own craft. The Multi material workshop: We have the capability to work in all woods from veneers to even logs with the bark still on. We having some welding and we are able to work in light metals. We have industrial sewing machines- can even sew heavy duty leather or canvas. Literally we can work in many medians. Literally I can teach many cross and overlapping skills, from wood finishing to distressing to make wood look like its' a 100 yrs old. With these skills, we restore, repair and repurpose many vintage items and make unique displays using many vintage and distressed items. If you are interested in vintage items and like fixing, repairing or restoring- you couldn't find a more engaging shop environment. We have a resource and materials such as Barnwood, vintage Hardware, distress metal artifacts - 200 different strands of barbed wire a hundred fifty years old - this is a Disneyland for vintage affectionados. We also carry a full gamut of building materials from solid wood to all kinds of Fasteners, Etc. I am a full fledged woodworker who has done the full gamut of commercial woodworking/ cabinetry and trained many fledgling-eager to learn people onward to become full cabinetmakers, hands on industrial designers- great builders. At times many former employees call me asking a technical question whereby we reaffirm our time spent together. I cannot help but silhouette how they struggled with complex work yet now complex and careful work is part of how they value themselves. Although I have financial challenges today, my stewarding skills towards others are real and give me tremendous purpose in life. I have something real and no one can take this away. Having said the above, I showcase and repurpose vintage items, from industrial artifacts; restoring farm furniture; mid century lamps; vintage Americana graphics to retro eye frames. I do this to support myself but more so I am finding a cadence whereby bringing these items back to life jettison against many of our current values of a throw-away society. This is not all roses; at times I am overworked and my work ethic doesn't protect me from this. Even in the din of night, self-overworked I can teach others the skills to find beauty. In a wood crate recovered from a barn, inside wrapped in old newspaper I found a handmade shoe organizer made from recycled feed sacks and a toy made from a carefully taken apart cigar boxes. I know the effort it takes to make such artifacts. Currently we are transforming our industrial building here in Williamsburg to continue as a multi purpose shop doing exciting projects such as utilizing vintage artifacts as photo and film props. I offer more than teaching how to put two pieces of wood together or making a vintage artifact come alive. I have an amazing rooftop garden and plant collection which emanates from years of volunteer work towards urban greening/NYC. I have numerous citations from NYC parks and US forestry. In appreciating and having inside access to NYC parks planting personnel and commercial growers, I'm catapulting making distress leaves to make lampshades & lighting displays for film shoots. See photo If you can sense the cadence of my words above, I offer an interdisciplinary approach to work that's a lifelong journey. I teach graciously not because I have all these skills but rather these skills allow me to approach work as a continual learning process. This is a compass to find meaning in work. YOU MUST REPLY: With your contact info, phone number, email address, what are better times to reach you? If you're working / in school, what hours you're busy or occupied? Included give a brief description of where you live, your background history and what you're looking for? People who fail this simple instruction are not going to be taken seriously nor replied to. For the last 18 years or so, I have been an on and off volunteer member of the Fixers Collective whereby we as talented trades people, we repair a broken chair to regaining usage of a tablet that could no longer recharge. This shop is a great learning experience for non-skilled or low level skilled person.
