Looking for motivated people in NYC to film breaking news and get paid. If you're always aware of what's happening around you—fires, police activity, major incidents—you can turn that into real income. About Us: Loudlabs NYC (LLN NYC), founded by Adam, has been providing breaking overnight news footage to NYC television stations since 2017 (9 years). Loudlabs was founded by Scott Lane in Los Angeles and was featured on the Netflix series Shot in the Dark (look it up). What you'll do: Respond to breaking news scenes Capture usable video footage Send footage quickly Conduct on-camera interviews with witnesses or neighbors Types of scenes you may cover: Crime scenes (including shootings and stabbings) Serious incidents involving trains Fatal car crashes (including highways) Pedestrians struck by vehicles Large fires with heavy smoke Protests and public gatherings Additional responsibilities: Interview witnesses and neighbors at scenes (not everyone will be cooperative) Be comfortable approaching strangers, asking questions, and requesting on-camera interviews Work in high-crime and high-risk areas throughout NYC Cover press conferences with police chiefs, fire chiefs, the police commissioner, the mayor, and other officials Maintain professionalism and be respectful when interacting with police, firefighters, and the public Write basic narratives describing incidents Make phone calls to editors and press offices Use your laptop to send emails and transmit footage Perform basic video editing for every video you shoot prior to sending it in Realistic expectations: Some nights nothing happens—you may be waiting for hours Other nights are nonstop with multiple incidents back-to-back You will be competing with other stringers—sometimes you win the story, sometimes you don't Requirements: Car required Experience preferred, will train the right candidate Must have an outgoing, extroverted personality for interviewing people (bilingual Spanish or other languages is a plus) Must know how to fully operate your ENG, mirrorless, or cinema camera of choice and have a working knowledge of videography fundamentals Must have a lens capable of shooting wide to tight (e.g., 28–200mm or similar range) Must have a tripod Must have a very steady hand and strong handheld shooting technique when not using a tripod Must have a shotgun microphone (not in-camera mic) Must have an LED camera light Must have an XLR microphone with a 20' XLR cable for press conferences Alternatively, DJI or Rode wireless microphones are acceptable Must be willing to obtain and learn how to operate one or more scanners to monitor NYPD and FDNY for breaking incidents Must be able to afford and invest in additional equipment and tools (camera gear, scanners, news notification services, etc.) Comfortable approaching strangers and conducting interviews in unpredictable environments Willing to move fast and work nights/weekends Strong situational awareness and ability to handle high-pressure situations Preferred camera examples (low-light performance is a top priority due to overnight work): Panasonic HC-X1 Panasonic UX180 Sony FX3 Sony FX2 (Comparable ENG, mirrorless, or cinema cameras with strong low-light capability are acceptable) How you get paid: Commissions earned when your footage broadcasts on TV Average earnings: hundreds to thousands per month depending on your effort Why join us: Real-world experience in news gathering We will help you obtain NYC press credentials Our video journalists have gone on to work for TV stations as reporters and video journalists Want to see what the job is like?
